Collaborating with the right therapist is a crucial step in the journey towards mental wellness. Our team at A New View Counseling understands the importance of this decision and are here to help guide you through the process.
In your search for the right provider, here are some questions you can ask yourself to determine if you’ve found your match.
Is this therapist qualified?
A therapist will spend four years earning their undergraduate degree and up to three years working toward their graduate degree. Following the award of their graduate degree, therapists will work under the supervision of another psychological professional for a minimum of two years.
You also want to consult with a therapist who is not only trained, but licensed. A mental health provider must have a license to practice in the state which you reside. This does mean that if you move, you can no longer see that therapist unless they are licensed to practice in your new state of residence.
For a therapist to offer services in a specialized area, that therapist receives additional training beyond their required education.
By choosing a fully trained and licensed therapist, you can feel confident in their ability to address your specific needs and concerns.
Does this therapist meet me where I am?
A great therapist is committed to providing care that is built on a foundation of collaboration and empowerment.
When you’ve found a therapist willing to meet you where you are, you’ll notice that each session is structured enough to be effective, yet flexible in allowing you to establish and meet your unique goals at your own pace.
You should never feel like what you’re experiencing is being diminished. The right professional will be able to look at a client through the lens of trauma and culture with the intent to foster growth, not suppress emotions.
Do I need a therapist that is just like me?
A therapist does not have to possess the same lived experience as you for you to find connection and support with them.
By prioritizing you, a skilled counselor can ensure that you receive personalized care without the risk of their personal agenda interfering with your progress.
