Luck and Personal Responsibility: Are You Just Leaving It to the Universe?

Luck often seems like an unpredictable force—something that happens to us rather than something we create. But what if luck is less about chance and more about how we engage with the world? The truth is, the opportunities, relationships, and breakthroughs we call luck are often the result of small choices, mindset shifts, and a willingness to step into the unknown.

Think about the last time something unexpectedly good happened to you. Maybe you met someone who changed your life, stumbled upon a career opportunity, or found yourself in the right place at the right time. While these moments may have felt like luck, they likely happened because of the choices you made—saying yes to an invitation, striking up a conversation, or simply being open to something new. The more we engage with life, the more we create space for these moments to occur.

On the other hand, when we retreat into routine and avoid risk, we limit the chances for serendipity. It’s easy to stick to familiar habits—texting instead of calling, choosing predictability over spontaneity, or keeping conversations surface-level. But the less we engage, the fewer opportunities we create for something unexpected and meaningful to unfold.

At the same time, the path that leads to challenges is also the one that leads to joy, success, and deep connection. If we want to invite more “luck” into our lives, we have to be willing to take a step beyond comfort—by being present, seeking out new experiences, and welcoming uncertainty. When we do, we start to see that luck isn’t just about chance. It’s about showing up, taking risks, and creating space for the unexpected to find us.
